How to Replace Rotten Brick Molding

Brick molding is exposed to the elements and becomes rotten if not maintained with paint and caulking. Fortunately, brick molding hasn't changed much over the years, and there is a high probability of finding a match. If you wait too long to replace the brick molding, you may end up replacing the door or window also. Once the brick mold begins rotting, it allows water to seep into other places. Many replace wood with composite brick molding, which doesn't rot and doesn't need painting.

Measure the length of the first piece and cut a 45-degree angle on one end.

    • 3

Nail on the brick molding with16d galvanized finish nails, spaced every 16-inches. Drill pilot holes for the nails to prevent the molding from splitting.

Cut the top piece to length with a 45-degree angle on each end, and nail it in place with 16d galvanized finish nails.

    • 5

Measure the last piece, cut it to fit and nail it in place.
