Horizontal siding is one of the most common types of home siding. It is comprised of wood, vinyl or metal slats that builders place across the home in a horizontal pattern. The edges of the boards overlap to hide caulking and nail heads and to help water run down the side of the home to prevent mold and mildew growth.
Vertical siding is when builders attach vertical slats of wood, vinyl or metal to the home. They generally attach these slats to the wall studs on the house. Builders will also usually place caulk in between the vertical slats so that they don't leak into the home.
Siding sheets are some of the cheapest types of siding. The siding can be made out of any material, but it is more commonly made out of metal or plywood. This type of siding is nailed directly to the wall studs; thus the nail heads are visible.
Siding shingles are rectangular pieces of wood or vinyl that are layered over one another, which can give a home a cottage look. The shingles are attached to either the wall studs on the side of the home, or they are attached to the house sheathing. The water runs off the shingles to help prevent mold from growing on the home.
Rock siding is one of the more expensive and custom siding styles. In this type of siding, builders lay stone directly against the side of the home. They generally use different sizes and shapes of stone to add interest to the home. They can also use stones and rocks of different colors for the same reason. Rock and stone siding requires lower maintenance than other types of home siding.
