A twist drill is the tool commonly used for boring holes. The drill uses different-size bits to make holes of varying sizes.
Bits range in size, but most twist drills come with 1/16-inch to ¼-inch bits. To improve accuracy and control, modern bits are made with pilot points, split points and angled points. This keeps the bit from moving while the drill is in use.
The standard twist drill creates holes up to ½ inch in diameter. For larger holes, carpenters use expansive bits. Bits are also available in metric measurements.
