Retrieve the piece of wood or metal you are cutting. Place it on a cutting table and secure both ends with clamps or vice grips.
Draw a cutting line on the wood or metal. Using a pencil and a straight edge or ruler, draw a straight line between the cutting points.
Drill a small hole at each end of the straight cut. Score the wood or metal by slowly and steadily cutting the surface of the wood or metal along the drawn line with a utility knife. Repeat two to three times to leave a distinct score line.
Insert the jigsaw blade into the drilled hole at one end of the wood or metal. Push the jigsaw along the scored line slowly, pausing occasionally to ensure the cut is following the scored line. Once the cut is complete, release the clamps or vice grips from the wood or metal.
