How to Repair Scratches on a Light Cherry Piano

Most good pieces of furniture, such as a piano, have a finish that is thick enough so that if you have a few small scratches on the piece, they might not go down as deep as the wood. Elegant as a piano, cherry is a hard wood and usually holds up well. Whether the scratches are light or deep, you should be able to fix them with one of a few methods and restore your piano to its original luster.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a small scratch in your light cherry piano with red shoe polish, a felt-tipped marker or a crayon. You may have to try a combination of a few colors on paper first to try to match your furniture. Try a package of furniture touch-up markers by combining the red and light wood colors to match the color of your wood.

Apply iodine as an alternative to crayons, markers or shoe polish. Dip a cotton swab in it and apply it, or use a very thin paint brush. Try it on an inconspicuous spot first, such as the underside of the piano, to see if the color matches.

Fill deep scratches with a wax stick by melting the stick and allowing a small amount to drip into the scratch. Work the wax into the scratch with a spatula and smooth it with a razor blade.
