How to Polish a Table Saw

Keeping a polished surface for your table saw retards rust and aids in moving wood through the saw blade. Paste wax, used for polishing, retains a thin layer of protection for the metal surface. When moisture in the air comes into contact with a bare metal surface, rust forms. Rust on a table saw top not only impedes a smooth flow for cutting wood but also creates a safety hazard when using excessive force to push wood through the sharp blade.

Things You'll Need

  • Light machine oil
  • Steel wool (optional)
  • Scrubbing pad (optional)
  • Clean cloth
  • Paste wax for metal

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the power to the saw by unplugging it or turning off the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Clean the table saw top with a light coating of machine oil. Gently rub the oil into the surface with a piece of steel wool or a scrubbing pad. Abrasion from the steel wool or scrubbing pad removes rust and other built-up debris.

    • 3

Wipe the surface with a clean cloth. You might have to add another light coating of machine oil to remove any leftover materials.

    • 4

Dab the paste wax applicator into the paste wax. Apply a generous amount to the table saw's surface.

    • 5

Work the wax in small, circular patterns until the surface is covered with a coating. Leave the wax in place until is dries. The dry wax application will turn to a light white.

    • 6

Buff the dried wax from the surface with a clean cloth. Apply a second coat of paste wax to the surface, if necessary.
