How to Fix a Table With Worn-off Clear Coat

Most wood tables have clear coating to protect it from damage. If part of the clear coat was damaged, you can either try to fix it or replace the whole coating if the damage is extensive. You should determine if the damage is too extensive for you to repair as a repaired coating is never as strong as a new one.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Repair

    • 1

Clean the area where the coating is chipped or worn with 120-grit sandpaper. Ensure the surface is smooth to the touch without small pieces of the original coating left behind.

    • 2

Clean sand and dust off the surface with a can of compressed air.

    • 3

Apply the new coating over the sanded area using a small brush, one-half the size of the damaged coating area.

    • 4

      Let the coating dry.

    • 5

Even out the coating with 600-grit sandpaper until the transition between the new and the old clear coat cannot be felt to the touch.

    Replace

    • 6

Remove the bulk of the remaining clear coating with a manual or electric sander with 50-grit sandpaper.

    • 7

Change to 120 or more grit sandpaper, and sand the top of the table until the surface is smooth.

    • 8

Remove any dust on the table top with a vacuum cleaner or a can of compressed air.

    • 9

Use a large brush to apply a layer of clear coating on the table. Let dry and give a quick sanding on the table to smooth the coat of finish.

    • 10

Apply the next coat and sand. Apply as many coats as the manufacturer of the coating you are using advises, making sure to sand between coats.
