How to Install a Scribe Molding

Scribe molding, or scribing, is a technique used to cover the uneven gap at the side of a cabinet, or other woodwork, where it meets an uneven wall. Rather than cutting the cabinet to fit, a small piece of hardwood, stained or painted to match, is cut with an uneven edge, matching the wall, with a flat edge along the opposite side that can be matched up to the side panel, or bulkhead, of the cabinet, blending the woodwork into the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the cabinet or other woodwork or fixture, so that it is level and attached to the wall before fitting scribes. This will enable you to see any inconsistencies clearly. Measure the distance between the wall and fixture at the top, bottom and middle. Cut a piece of hardwood as long as the height of your fixture and as wide as the widest point between the fixture and the wall, plus 1 inch, with a table saw.

Tape a sharpened pencil to the side of a 1-inch dowel rod, so that the pencil is parallel to the length of the dowel with its sharpened point protruding from the end of the dowel.

    • 3

Place the hardwood piece upright in front of the fixture against the wall. Place a level along the edge opposite the wall. Tilt the hardwood until the bubble is centered in the indicator. Run the pencil along the face of the hardwood with the dowel riding along the face of the wall. Trace the profile of the wall onto the hardwood.

Cut the hardwood along this line with a band saw. Sand the edge until it is smooth with 100-grit sandpaper. Fit this scribe into the gap between the wall and the fixture. Nail through the side panel of the fixture into the edge of the scribe with a pin nail gun, placing 1 nail every 8 inches.
