How to Assemble Frames for Access Doors

Access doors come in many varieties. These are doors or panels that allow access to an area for numerous purposes. Many homes have access doors in the ceiling to allow attic access. An access door can be installed to make entry into your attic possible for maintenance or storage. Locate this access panel in your ceiling to make an entry that will be approximately 16-by-30 inches and allow for easy access.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the area that will allow the easiest access into the attic from the ceiling in a closet or hallway. The area of the attic directly above this spot should be high enough so that you can climb into the attic. Find the attic joists with the stud finder and mark their locations on the ceiling. Mark the inside edges of the attic joists for the door to be cut from the ceiling using a carpenter's square. This door, or panel, must be large enough for you and others to be able to safely climb into the attic -- approximately 16 inches wide between the joists and about 30 inches long.

    • 2

Cut out the ceiling door with a razor knife, going slowly and following the template markings you have made, cutting the sheetrock along the inside edges of the attic joists above it. Cut this panel out completely and remove it to a safe spot. Climb your ladder and inspect the area you have chosen for the access panel. Make sure it does not have any obstructions and allows you to climb into the attic.

    • 3

Measure and cut two sections of 2-by-4 framing boards to go between the joists at both ends between the joists where the panel was cut. These will both be approximately 16 inches long. Place these two framing pieces flush along these inside edges and attach them level with the top of the ceiling drywall and screw them into place with the drill and wood screws or nails from the outside of the joists into the ends of these pieces.

Measure and cut the 1-by-4 boards to fit along the floor joists and the two 2-by-4 framing boards cut in step 3. Cut these pieces so that a suitable edge overhangs the access door opening for the access panel to rest in place. Two pieces will be approximately 16 inches and two will be about 30 inches but measure carefully for your exact needs. Attach the 1-by-4 framing pieces in place from underneath, through these sections and sheetrock and into the attic joists and framing installed in step 2. Either screws or nails can be used to attach them.
