How to Cut Angles for Crown Molding With a Compound Miter Saw

A compound miter saw can quickly make angled cuts on smaller pieces of wood. The saw will have an adjustable round base with several degrees marked on it. You can loosen the lock and move the saw to a specific degree for making a cut. Advanced compound miter saws have a tilt option to change the angle of the saw blade itself, allowing you to make 45-degree angle cuts. The saw makes the cut when you pull down on the handle and the blade "chops" through the wood.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of crown molding you will cut, using a tape measure. Mark the back side of the molding with an "I" or "O" with a pencil to indicate which end is for the inside or outside corner.

    • 2

Place the crown molding on the compound miter saw table. Line up the cut line with the spot you marked for cutting.

    • 3

Change the angle of the compound miter saw blade. Release the locking mechanism and move the blade to the right or left, depending on the angle marked on the crown molding.

    • 4

Turn on the saw. Pull down on the handle slowly and cut the crown molding.

    • 5

Turn off the saw and remove the piece of wood. Dry-fit the crown molding together to ensure the cuts are correct. Continue making cuts for the crown molding project.
