How to Measure Crown Molding inside Corners

Crown molding projects require accurate measurements to ensure the molding fits inside and outside corners exactly. Aside from proper fit, accurate measurements are crucial to matching the crown molding design in the corners. Inside corners in particular can be difficult to measure accurately. While you might assume a corner is a true right angle, any slight deviation from 90 degrees will result in cuts that do not match when you install the crown molding.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable protractor (360 degrees)
  • Pencil and paper
  • Compound miter saw

Instructions

    • 1

Hold an adjustable protractor up to the inside corner.

    • 2

Place the right side of the protractor directly against the wall. Move the left side of the protractor until it is flat against the opposite wall.

    • 3

Write down the angle shown on the adjustable protractor. Divide the measured angle by 2 in order to get the degrees to cut each piece of crown molding.

    • 4

Set the compound miter saw with the angles from Step 3. Make sure you cut one side at a right angle and the other at a left angle to properly fit the molding in the corner.
