How to Measure Angles for Molding

Molding is the decorative trim that you find around the top or bottom of walls in your home. Both inside and outside angles are common with molding. Inside angles are at the inside corner of walls or cabinets whereas outside angles extend away from interior walls. When installing molding, you will need to take accurate measurements of these angles to ensure proper fits around angles and corners. Failure to do this properly will leave spaces between the molding pieces that you may not be able to fill in.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a 360-degree adjustable protractor to measure angles. The protractor should be able to stretch around every corner in your home.

    • 2

Place one side of the protractor against the right wall of an inside angle. Move the dial until the second side of the protractor reaches the opposite (left) wall. Write down the angle measurement.

    • 3

Measure outside angles using the process from Step 2. The difference will be that you measure on the outside of the wall rather than the inside.
