The Best Way to Seal Granite Tile Countertops

Granite is a hard stone material that is a popular building material for countertops. Like all countertop materials, granite is susceptible to stains such as vinegar, lemon juice and water rings. Sealing granite countertops will help reduce the speed at which granite stains. This is because it makes the granite less porous so that stains will absorb into the surface slower. Most granite sealers have the same process for application. Choose a high quality sealer that will last for at least five years.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply granite cleaner to the granite countertop.

    • 2

Scrub the granite cleaner into the countertop with a damp sponge. Scrub until the granite is completely clean.

    • 3

Rinse the granite and dry it completely with a clean cloth.

    • 4

Let the granite dry for at least 24 hours. Do not use the granite in the meantime. This will ensure that it remains clean and that it is completely dry. Never seal wet granite.

    • 5

Apply the granite sealer to the granite with a clean cloth. Rub the cloth over the surface of the granite so that there is a thin layer of sealer.

    • 6

Let the granite sealer dry according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

    • 7

Buff off the excess sealer with a clean terry cloth. The nap of the terry cloth will grind away the excess sealer and make the countertop shine.
