How to Secure Cabinets From Falling

A free-standing wall cabinet can be moved from wall to wall at will, but presents a danger if something occurs to tip it over, such as an earthquake. You can mount a free-standing wall cabinet to a wall to keep it upright and secure. A few supplies from a hardware store and some tools that are found in most households is needed. No extensive damage to the wall or cabinet will occur.

Things You'll Need

  • Ladder
  • 2 "L" brackets, 8 inches long each
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • 1 plastic locking tabs

Instructions

    • 1

Place the free-standing wall cabinet against a wall. Place a ladder against the wall so you can reach the top of the cabinet. Place an "L" bracket on each back end at the top of the cabinet, so that the one end of the bracket lies on the top of the cabinet while the other end butts up against the wall.

    • 2

Draw a dot on the wall through the hole in each of the "L" brackets. Remove the brackets. Place the tip of a Phillips screwdriver against one of the dots. Hammer the tip through the dot and into the hole with a hammer. Twist the tip clockwise in the hole before pulling it out. Repeat this procedure with the other dot on the wall.

Insert a plastic locking tab into each hole. Hammer the screws into the holes. Wipe off the top of the cabinet with a water-moistened paper towel. Dry the top of the cabinet with a dry paper towel.

    • 4

Place the "L" brackets back on the top of the cabinet in the position they were in earlier. Screw wood screws through the side of one of the "L" brackets butted up against the wall -- use an electric screwdriver to drive the screws deep into the plastic locking tab inside the wall. Repeat this with the other "L" bracket.

Screw wood screws through the side of one of the "L" brackets on the top of the cabinet with the electric screwdriver. Repeat this with the other "L" bracket.
