How to Cut Crown Molding for Cathedral Ceilings

Cathedral ceilings typically have a peak in the center of the ceiling. Adding crown molding to the cathedral portion can add a special look to the room. One troublesome issue with adding the crown molding to this ceiling type are the angles you will need to cut. While most rooms have 90- or 45-degree angles, cathedral ceilings can have a wide range of angles. Using an adjustable protractor can help you determine the special angles necessary for the cathedral ceiling.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a ladder near the angles you will need to measure. Ensure the ladder will allow you to reach the angles for measuring safely.

    • 2

Place one side of the adjustable protractor against one wall in the angle. Move the other side of the protractor to the other wall. Note the angle for that specific corner of the ceiling.

    • 3

Lay the crown molding on a flat surface, such as a portable workbench or sawhorses.

    • 4

Transfer the angle measurements to the crown molding using the protractor and a pencil.

    • 5

Use a wood saw to cut the crown molding along the line you drew to match the angle. Use sandpaper to smooth the rough cut area of the molding.

    • 6

Repeat the process to measure angles and cut the remaining pieces of crown molding for the cathedral ceiling.
