How to Restore a Rusted Table Saw

Many table saws, particularly cabinet and hybrid models, have a cast iron saw table top that is prone to rusting. The rust on a saw table is not only unsightly but can also inhibit the movement of wood over the table. Untreated rust can eventually cause damage, such as pitting, to the saw table. Fortunately, you can restore a rusted table saw top with some mineral spirits and steel wool, and then protect it from future damage with a protective spray.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a pair of protective latex gloves and wipe down the saw table with a lint-free cloth.

    • 2

Pour a small amount of mineral spirits on the rusted area of the table saw.

    • 3

Scrub the rusted areas with a piece of #0000 steel wool. Work in a circular motion until the rust is removed. Add more mineral spirits to the work area as the liquid on the table top evaporates.

    • 4

Wipe the affected area with the cloth and inspect the table top. If more rust is found, repeat the previous two steps until the rust is removed.

    • 5

Spray a liberal amount of a silicon-free protective spray. There are a number of such products available designed for table saws. These products protect and allow wood to glide across the table without damaging the finish of the wood.
