How to Remove Teflon or Silicone From a Table Saw

A quality table saw table is typically made from cast iron. These tables are very heavy, giving the saw added stability, and are honed to a very flat surface. Because these tables are made from cast iron, they're easily prone to rusting. To prevent the table from being damaged by rust in the time between manufacturing and arriving in your shop, the tables are sprayed with a sealant. Before using your new saw, remove the Teflon or silicone from the table saw table.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the protective plastic wrap from the saw table.

    • 2

Put on a pair of latex gloves. Place a liberal amount of mineral spirits onto a clean, lint-free cloth.

    • 3

Wipe the cloth over the table top to loosen and remove the Teflon or silicone from the table top. Use just enough mineral spirits to completely remove the substances cleanly. Don't allow the mineral spirits to linger on the table, as it could stain the metal surface.

    • 4

Wipe down the table with a dry, clean cloth. If there are stubborn spots of Teflon or silicone that didn't come off with the treated cloth, reapply a bit of mineral spirits to the stubborn area and clean the spots lightly with some fine steel wool.

    • 5

Spray a light layer of table saw protective spray onto the table. Leave the spray on the surface for 90 seconds before wiping it off with a clean cloth.
