How to Make a Welding Rod

Welding rods are useful for a variety of repair jobs involving metal or other metallic alloy materials. There are three types of welding rod, according to the Welding Technology Machines website: copper-coated mild steel alloy, high-carbon steel alloy and 3 percent nickel steel alloy. Material requirements for making a welding rod can be detailed, depending on the type you wish to make. Choose the welding rod material based on the type of job you are completing.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the type of metal needed to complete your welding job. Purchase metal shavings or brittle from a hardware store to be loaded into a welding machine.

    • 2

Plug in the welding rod machine. The type of machine needed will again depend on the type of rods you are making for the job. For example, general use welding rods are usually labeled in size as 6010 for direct current machines or 6011 for alternating current machines.

    • 3

Load metal shavings or brittle into welding machine per the manufacturer's instructions. Depending on the type of metal you are working with, these shavings can be large or small.

    • 4

Turn on the welding rod machine to begin pressing rods into shape. Wear protective gloves and a welding mask (or similar protection) when operating the machinery.
