How to Remove a Drill Chuck From a J33 Delta 15-655

The J33-Delta 15-655 drill press uses a tapered Jacobs style chuck. This means, the cut is pressed into the shaft that you move up and down to complete the drilling process. If you inspect around the chuck you will notice no bolts or setscrews securing the chuck to the shaft. There is only one way to remove the chuck from the shaft, and that is with a hole punch and a hammer.

Instructions

Rotate the ballcrank clockwise to lock the shaft in the upright position. The ballcrank is the metal bar that extends out of the left side of the drill press head. It is bent to an angle of approximately 30 degrees and has a small metal ball on the end of it.

Place several rags on the drill press table. In most cases, the drill chuck will fall to the table. The rags will soften the impact and prevent damaging the chuck or denting the table.

Place the tip of the hole punch or chisel against the top edge of the drill chuck and hit the other end of the hole punch with the hammer. The object is to hit downward on the drill chuck to force it out of the hole in the shaft. Repeat this process until the chuck calls out of the shaft. It should take only two or three strikes.
