What Tools Do You Need to Set Up a Woodworking Shop?

There's almost no limit to the number and sizes of tools and machinery used in a woodworking shops. If you had a fully-loaded shop, you'd soon learn which tools are often used, which are seldom used and which are only important for specific projects.
  1. Basic Tools

    • The basic tools you'll use for woodworking include a workbench, tape measure, saw, drill and hammer. These are all you will need to measure your wood, cut it to size and fasten it together. You will be able to complete many projects using only these basic tools.

    Handy Tools

    • Other tools which will come in handy on many of your woodworking projects include, clamps, vises, screwdrivers, chisels, paint brushes, saw horses, squares and straight-edges. These will allow you to undertake larger projects and complete them with more precision, start to finish.

    Specialty Tools

    • Certain projects require specialty tools to complete. You may wish to outfit your workshop with a router, jig saw, sander, plane or lathe. There's hardly an end to the types and configurations available. If you plan to build fine furniture, cabinets or use your woodworking shop commercially, plan on many of these tools becoming essential to your work.

    Other Essentials

    • Your workshop will need a supply of non-woodworking essentials to be safe and efficient. Stock up on safety gear, such as ear and eye protection and cleaning supplies, such as brooms, dustpans and vacuum cleaners.
