How to Use a Flathead

Flathead screwdrivers, like other screwdrivers, tighten and loosen screws in a work area. The flat-head design comes in different sizes and thicknesses to accommodate a large assortment of slotted screws. In addition, the handle of the screwdriver comes in different lengths so workers can use the screwdriver in almost any situation. Besides working with screws, the flathead can be used in conjunction with other tools, such as the hammer. Hit the hammer on the tip of the handle to slide the flathead under objects, such as baseboards, to loosen from the wall.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the appropriate flathead screwdriver for the project at hand. The best way to determine what size of flathead screwdriver to use is to match the tip of the screwdriver to the slotted screw.

    • 2

Insert the tip of the flathead screwdriver into the head of the slotted screw. The screwdriver should be aligned with the screw so they form a straight line.

    • 3

Using minor force, press forward with the screwdriver and turn clockwise to insert the screw into the work area. Continue pressing forward and turning until the screw is completely inserted.

    • 4

Remove a screw from a work area by inserting the screwdriver tip into the slotted screw head and turning counterclockwise.
