How to Troubleshoot a Lathe

A lathe is used to turn or shape rectangular blocks of wood, creating cylindrical forms like chair legs and spindles. It also can be used to create bowls and for polishing, among other things. Problems with a lathe can be related to the motor, including it not starting, and the machine slowing, tool chattering and broken work pieces. These kinds of issues can be identified and corrected with some troubleshooting.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the power line is connected if the motor won't start or won't reach full power. If you're using an extension cord, voltage loss can occur if the cord is long. Reduce the length and try the motor again. Inspect the cord for damage if you continue to experience problems and check both the machine and house service box for tripped circuit breakers. Reset any you find tripped, and try the lathe again.

Reduce the load if the motor's power outlet decreases as you're using the lathe. Try removing some lights, or other appliance from the circuit.

    • 3

True up the roundness of the work piece before turning it on the lathe if the tool chatters when turning. Make sure that you are cutting with the grain. Re-make the center marks and try the work piece again. On a rectangular block of wood, draw diagonal lines across the end of the work piece. Where the two lines cross is the center for mounting on the lathe.

Try a new piece of wood if the work piece breaks up while turning. The original wood was likely flawed.
