How to Use a Cordless Drill with Self-Tapping Screws into Beams

If you need to drive self-tapping screws into large wooden beams you will find it a lot easier to accomplish using a cordless drill adapted to accept standard screwdriver bits. Adapters are inexpensive and are readily available from your local hardware store. They allow screwdriver bits to be used in drills safely when a large amount of torque is required.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the point at which you wish to insert the screw with a cross using a pencil. Fit a 1/8-inch pilot drill to your drill according to the handbook for your model.

    • 2

Drill a 1/8-inch pilot hole at the center of the cross roughly half as deep as the screw you are installing. Remove the drill bit and replace it with the screwdriver-bit adapter. Set the drill at a high torque setting by twisting the collar near the chuck.

    • 3

Fit a screwdriver bit into the adapter by pushing it into the end until a "click" is heard. Check that it is securely locked in by pulling on it, the adapter should hold it firmly. The correct type of bit for your screw will be listed on the package in which the screws came.

Hold the drill in your dominant hand and locate the end of the screw in the pilot hole with your other. Engage the screwdriver bit in the screw head and apply moderate pressure while squeezing the trigger gently. Continue driving until the screw has been inserted all the way into the beam and is secure.
