How to Load a Blade Into a Scroll Saw

Scroll saws are a safe and effective woodworking tool used to cut shapes out of wood rather than make straight cuts. They have small, thin blades which make it easy to maneuver through the wood for those difficult cuts. The blade needs to be properly tensioned to produce a "high C" pitch when plucked. If the blade is not tensioned properly, it will break. Most modern scroll saws have easy-to-install blades to avoid having to worry about obtaining the "high C" that woodworkers of the past used to determine when their blades were properly calibrated.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect power from the saw by pulling the power plug or disconnecting the battery.

    • 2

Remove the lower arm guard and throat plate from the saw. There are three screws on the left of the device securing them.

    • 3

Loosen the blade tension adjustment knob by rotating it counterclockwise.

    • 4

Push down on upper blade holder and remove the top portion of the blade by sliding it out.

    • 5

Push the blade downward. The bottom portion of this frees the bottom part of the blade. Pull the blade up and out to remove it.

    • 6

Feed the new blade up through the bottom of the table.

    • 7

Hook it onto the lower blade holder. Make sure the teeth are facing the right direction, which should be forward and down.

    • 8

Push down on the upper blade holder, push the top end of the blade into the holder and release the blade holder.

    • 9

Tighten the blade tension adjustment knob. The blade should give a clear tone when plucked.

    • 10

Replace the lower arm guard and throat plate. Secure them with the screws you removed earlier.
