How to Drill a Brick Wall to Install Adhesive Anchors in It

Adhesive anchors are used for a variety of tasks to secure items to a wall. Before the anchors are installed, a hole must be drilled in the wall. When the wall is constructed of brick, drilling a hole in the wall must be completed using a slightly different procedure than drilling into a wall that consists of other materials. Drilling into brick is best accomplished with a corded drill rather than a battery-operated drill. The corded drill has the power you need to drill into the hard surface of the brick.

Instructions

Mark the spot on the wall where the anchor is to be located. Use a grease pencil to mark the location. Double-check the location to avoid drilling an unnecessary hole in the wall.

    • 2

Install a masonry bit, sized to the adhesive anchor, into the chuck at the end of the drill. Use the chuck key to loosen the chuck and then tighten it once the bit is installed. If the drill is the style that does not have a key, operate the chuck by hand.

    • 3

Hold the drill with the tip of the bit directly on the mark you made. Hold the trigger end of the drill in your dominant hand and place your other hand under the front of the drill just behind the chuck to keep the drill steady. Hold the drill at a 90-degree angle to the wall so the hole is drilled straight.

Pull the trigger and guide the bit into the wall on the mark with moderated pressure. Let the drill do most of the work and mainly guide it into the wall. When the hole is drilled to the desired depth, keep the drill running as you slowly back out the drill bit from the hole.
