How to Operate an Industrial Disc Sander

A industrial disc sander is designed much like a circular table saw but uses a sanding disc instead of a saw blade. Most all industrial type disc sanders are used for wood working and for sanding metal. The sander is made up of a table, adjustable guide, miter adjustment and a sanding disc wheel. The industrial sander is designed so that the machine does most of the work. All the worker has to do is hold the piece of wood or metal and guide it across the sanding disc. Always use protective safety equipment before using the sander.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the industrial disc sander on a flat surface. Familiarize yourself with all of the operating controls. The controls consist of the power on/off lever, table height adjustment wheel, miter angle bracket and the adjustable table leveler.

    • 2

Put on a pair of safety glasses and a pair of protective work gloves. Hook the power cord on the industrial disc sander up to an electrical outlet.

    • 3

Lower the table height until the table is below the sanding disc wheel. Pull the plastic adhesive off strip off of the back of a new sanding disc. Press the adhesive side of the disc onto the sanding disc wheel. Press the disc firmly onto the wheel and hold it there for about 5 seconds. Make sure that the disc is completely adhered to the entire sanding wheel.

    • 4

Adjust the table height until the table is at least two inches above the bottom of the sanding wheel. Use the table leveling lever to level that table across from the sanding wheel.

    • 5

Adjust the miter adjustment angle on the miter adjustment bracket. Once the miter angle is in place, lock the miter angle bracket down. Turn the power button on the sander to the "on" position.

    • 6

Slide a piece of wood or metal onto the sander table so that the edge of the piece is about 1/8 inch away from the sanding wheel. Slowly begin to slide the edge of the piece against the sanding wheel by moving it in a straight forward direction away from the body.

    • 7

Move the piece of wood or metal away from the sanding wheel and bring the piece back to the front of the sanding wheel. Repeat the sanding process by using a straight forward direction. Do not pull the piece against the sander toward your body.

    • 8

Adjust the angle of the miter as needed to sand the piece of wood or metal that you are using. Continue sanding the wood or metal until the piece is smooth. Adjust the table height and the miter angle as needed when sanding the wood.
