How to Calculate Decimal to Metric Equivalence

There are multiple systems of measurement that can be used. The two chief ones are the Metric system and the Imperial system. Frequently the Imperial system is represented in terms of fractional values such as 1/64 inches. These are also representable as decimals such as 0.015625 inches. Converting from these decimal representations to the Metric system requires applying a particular formula from the chart linked below to a starting measurement. Fortunately, while these are the underlying mathematics, there are a number of online calculators that will do the work for you (one is linked below).

Instructions

  1. Convert the Unit of Measurement

    • 1

Identify the unit of measurement of the measure to be converted. If the initial measurement is in fractional notation, divide the numerator by the denominator to get a Decimal representation.

    • 2

Look in the Table of Equations and find the entry for the unit of measurement.

    • 3

Apply the equation to the initial measurement by entering it into the calculator.

    • 4

Write down the result - this is the Metric Equivalence of the initial Decimal measure.
