Place the decorative shutters in the location they will occupy and make a pencil mark at each corner. If you are installing working shutters, make a mark on the frame where the hinges must be installed.
Cut the tip of the caulk tube at a 45 degree angle using a utility knife. Poke the foil cover at the bottom of the tip with the metal rod on the caulk gun. Install the caulk tube into the caulk gun and insert the plunger into the back. Turn the plunger handle half a turn and press the release button.
Apply the caulk inside the pencil marks you made on the siding or the frame. Ensure that the caulk is well distributed throughout the entire area inside the pencil marks. Use a finger to spread the caulk evenly over the area. Wipe your finger on a rag. Let the caulk partly dry for 10 to 15 minutes.
Remove the hinges from the shutters if you are installing working shutters using the proper type of screwdriver.
Install the decorative shutters over the caulked area on the siding of the house. Set the hinges in place on the frame over the caulk if working shutters are being installed. Hold the shutters or the hinges in place for a few minutes to ensure they will stick by themselves. Allow the hinges to dry for 24 hours before reattaching the shutters.
