How to Tie a Monkey Knot

A monkey knot is tied at the end of a rope. It serves as a weight for the rope or simply as an ornamental knot. It is also called monkey's fist knot. When a rope is to be heaved, the monkey knot gives it a weight to help the rope reach farther. There are other uses for the monkey knot including use in a slingshot and as a climber's anchor. The knot can be tied with or without an object within the knot.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap one end of the rope around four fingers. These fingers should be held closely but loosely.

    • 2

Wrap the length of the rope two more times, making a total of three coils.

    • 3

Change the direction of the rope to be perpendicular to the three coils already wrapped.

    • 4

Wrap the rope around the three coils from the outside and in the perpendicular direction.

    • 5

Make two more such wraps so that there are three coils going around the first set of three coils.

    • 6

Remove the four fingers while securing the loop made by the second set of coils in one finger and the free end of the rope in the other hand.

    • 7

Change the direction to make a third set of three coils. This set of coils is smaller. It will wrap perpendicular, across and on the outside of the second set of coils but on the inside of the first set of coils.

    • 8

Pull the ends of the rope to tighten the knot. Secure the wrapping end of the rope to the free end.
