How to Use Plastic Fasteners

Plastic fasteners are used for installing objects to drywall and other hollow wall surfaces. These fasteners come in a wide variety of styles. They are designed to fan out, expand or mushroom at the end of the fastener once it has been installed so that it will not pull out of the wall. Plastic fasteners have a threaded center to accommodate a screw. The screw is threaded into the fastener once it has been installed into the wall. The tightening of the screw causes the end to expand.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill a 5/16-inch hole through the drywall in the desired position for the fastener, using a 5/16-inch drill bit and a drill.

    • 2

Slide the tip of the drywall fastener into the drilled hole. Tap the end of the fastener with a hammer to gently drive it into the wall. Make sure that the fastener is seated tightly against the drywall.

    • 3

Hold the item that you would like to mount against the wall. Align the mounting hole with the center of the plastic fastener.

    • 4

Drive the screw that came with the fastener through the mounting hole in the object and into the plastic fastener.
