How to Figure the Depth of a Drawer

The depth of a drawer is considered to be the distance from the inside of the front to the inside of the back. Finding the depth of a drawer may be important because you may need to know if certain items will fit inside the drawer, or you may be replacing the slides and need to know what size slides to purchase. Whatever the reason, drawer depth is ascertained in less than a minute in most cases.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the drawer until it is fully extended.

    • 2

Place the end of a standard carpenter's tape measure against the back of the drawer on the drawer bottom.

    • 3

Extend the tape measure along the bottom of the drawer until you reach the front. Bend the tape measure upward so that it is flat against the inside of the drawer front and forms a 90-degree angle. Ensure that the tape measure lies flat along the bottom of the drawer from front to back.

Read the number on the tape measure where it bends at the corner between the drawer front and the bottom.
