How to Repair Doors on Cabinets that Won't Close

If you have kitchen or bathroom cabinet doors that do not close completely or do not open all the way, the problem is not the door, it's the hinges. Cabinet doors are hung typically on hinges that have sliding mounting notches. This allows the cabinet installer to set each individual door according the particular quirks of the house and cabinetry. Over time, the screws fastened to the cabinet wall through into the hinges loosen, causing the door to become askew.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the cabinet door as far as possible. Look over the hinges and feel the individual screws with the tips of your fingers to determine which is loose.

    • 2

Loosen the screws further along with the other screws in the same hinge using a screwdriver. The screws should be loose enough so the hinge can move but tight enough so it does not come free from the cabinet.

    • 3

Hold the door in the position that it will open and close properly slightly repositioning the hinges, swinging it open and close and moving the hinges numerous times to ensure the door is properly aligned.

    • 4

Slowly fasten the screws back into place, tightening them with the screwdriver and periodically opening and closing the cabinet door to ensure it opens and closes correctly.

    • 5

Fasten the screws down tightly once you have achieved this balance. This will take several attempts before you find the right alignment and secure hinges in place with the screws.
