How do I Cut Plexiglas on a CNC Router?

Computer numerical control routers can be used to engrave and cut Plexiglas and other acrylic products, in addition to being used on wood and some metals. CNC routers are digitally automated tools that use X-, Y- and Z-axis inputs to determine when and where cuts or engraving should take place. The routers also feature a vacuum pump which holds the Plexiglas to the cutting table and sucks away any debris created by the cutting process.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the router is outfitted with a bit that is designed for acrylic or plastics. Using a bit that is made for wood or metal can crack or chip the Plexiglas.

    • 2

Place the Plexiglas on the cutting table and line up the spot of the first cut with the drill head. Do not remove the plastic protective coating on the sheet of Plexiglas. It is there to protect the Plexiglas from damage during cutting.

    • 3

Input the coordinates for each cut using the X-axis for left to right measurements, the Y-axis for back and forth and the Z-axis for up and down.

    • 4

Power up the vacuum pump and start the router. The machine will follow the inputs to cut the Plexiglas, using several automated passes of approximately 1/4-inch deep. Allow it to come to a stop before touching the Plexiglas.
