How to Replace Dowel Rods

Wooden dowel rods are cylindrical wooden sticks that are used as structural supports. They come in a variety of diameters and with or without fluting. Dowel rods can be found in art projects, furniture and other places where two piece of wood are joined together. Replacing a dowel requires no special skills, but you may need to use a pin puller if the dowel was compression fitted. A common reason for replacing a dowel rod is to repair the back of a chair where a spindle has broken.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the broken dowel out of the dowel hole. If this is not possible with either pliers or a pin puller, you will need to drill out the hole with a drill bit. Start with a small bit and move up incrementally until the entire hole is clean.

    • 2

Remove any wood glue that is left around the dowel hole with a wood chisel.

    • 3

Squeeze wood glue into the dowel hole and work it around the inside of the hole with the back end of a pencil.

    • 4

Cover the lower end of the dowel with wood glue. Work the glue into the grooves with your finger.

    • 5

Place the glued end of the dowel into the dowel hole and tap it into place with a rubber mallet.
