How to Attach Hardwoods to Concrete

Hardwood and concrete are often used together as building material. The concrete forms a strong, level base for a carport or deck, and the wood provides the frame and structure. Ensuring that the wood does not wander off from the concrete means that effective connectors need to anchor the hardwood down. A boot-mount post anchor connector is used when the concrete is already poured and set. Having a helper to hold the post when you mount it makes the job much easier.

Things You'll Need

  • Hardwood post
  • Boot-mount post anchor
  • Recommended bolt and nails for style of boot mount
  • Electric drill with carbide bit matching the bolt size
  • White tape
  • Marker pen
  • Can of compressed air
  • Breathing mask and goggles
  • Carpenter's level
  • Hammer

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where the hardwood post will attach to the concrete. Set the boot into place and mark the concrete where the bolt hole will be drilled. Remove the boot.

    • 2

Compare the drill bit to the bolt, and wrap the top of the bit where the bolt ends with a piece of white tape so that you'll know that you've drilled exactly the length of the bolt.

    • 3

Put on your breathing mask and eye protection.

    • 4

Drill into the concrete, stopping every few seconds to blow the concrete dust out with compressed air. Stop when the white tape is level with the top of the concrete. The hole should be at the right depth. Measure with a small stick and compare with the bolt.

    • 5

Place the mount back where it is to go.

    • 6

Dab the bolt with a small amount of thread adhesive and screw it into the hole to firmly hold the mount into place.

    • 7

Set the hardwood post into the mount and ensure that it is plumb using a carpenter's level. Adjust it with shims under the post as necessary to make it perfectly perpendicular.

    • 8

Nail one nail in on two opposite sides, and then recheck the plumb. If it is still holding true, continue to nail all the nails in on all four sides. The hardwood post is now solidly attached to the concrete.
