How to Fix a Benchtop

Repairing a work bench top that has been well-used is an easy procedure to accomplish in just a few minutes' time. The best way to go about repairing the top is to install a sacrificial board over the top of the old board. This will allow you to continuously replace the work bench top whenever you feel as though it has become worn to the point that it is no longer serviceable. MDF is an ideal surface to use for a work bench because of its strength and lack of porosity, making it relatively easy to clean.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the top of the work bench surface with the tape measure, and then transfer this measurement to the MDF.

    • 2

Cut out the new bench top with a jigsaw, being careful to work slowly so that you don't tear the MDF.

    • 3

Lay the cut MDF on top of the old bench top so that the sides and front are flush.

    • 4

Drive wood screws through the new bench top and into the old bench top with the electric drill to hold the MDF in place and finish the repair of the work bench top. You should only need approximately one wood screw for every two feet of surface area to effectively hold the MDF down.
