How to Score Saw Blades

Scoring a piece of metal allows you to create a small cut along the surface of the metal where you will eventually fold or cut the metal. Scoring a saw blade may be necessary if you need to shorten the length of the blade or remove a damaged piece of the end of the saw blade. Scoring a saw blade in this way allows you to salvage or repurpose an otherwise unusable saw, saving you money and a trip to the hardware store.

Instructions

    • 1

Don safety equipment, such as gloves and goggles.

    • 2

Secure the saw blade you are scoring to a flat, sturdy surface, such as a workbench. Use C-clamps or other such tools to make the blade steady.

    • 3

Measure and draw the scoring line along with a straight edge ruler and pencil. Remeasure the line after drawing it the first time to ensure it is accurate.

    • 4

Place the straight edge along the pencil line and slowly draw the scoring tool along the line on the surface of the blade towards you. A scoring tool looks like a small utility knife with a rounded blade at one end. They can be purchased at hardware stores and craft stores.

    • 5

Repeat the drawing process with the scoring tool along the saw blade four to five times, increasing your pressure each time.

    • 6

Brush away any dust or metal filings that might have been created by your scoring. The scoring line should be clearly visible, straight and it should be obvious to touch. That is, you should notice it when you run your fingers over the line.
