How to Connect a Dust Collector Pipe

The quality of the air we breathe is fundamental to our health and well being. Repeated exposure to dirty air will cause long-term health issues. Reducing such exposure is done with dust collecting systems. These are similar to vacuum cleaners in that they suck in air and separate the dirt from the clean air. Carpenters and manufacturing plants install them in localized areas and use sections of pipe, connected together, to direct the air cleaning to specific locations.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the adjustable clamp over one end of the pipe you want to connect to another pipe. Dust collector duct work is designed to be moved regularly to change the air-cleaning system as the work environment changes. These ducts come in short sections with turned-up ends. These ends allow the connection of two pipes with a special clamp.

    • 2

Align the second pipe end with the first pipe's end so they are flush with one another.

    • 3

Slide the adjustable clamp over the middle of the two pipes so that both pipes' turned-up edges are inside the "U" shaped groove of the clamp. Close the clamp's handle to lock the two pipes together.

    • 4

Tighten the nut on the clamp until the clamp is firmly around the two pipes' turned-up ends without damaging them. The tightened clamp holds the pipes in a way that creates the sealed joint necessary for a dust collection system.

    • 5

Remove the clamp by opening the handle and pulling the pipes apart. Pipes are disassembled to move the dust collection to another work area.
