How to Make Your Tile Slip-Free

Slippery tile can be a health hazard to people of all ages. Slips and falls are responsible not only for broken bones and sprains, but in some cases, death. Tile flooring is often employed in heavily trafficked rooms, such as bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms because it is easy to clean and maintain. While tile does have its benefits, it is important that you take precautionary measures to keep your tile slip-free for the safety of yourself and your guests.

Instructions

Place floor mats in entryways so guests can dry their feet when they enter a room. Slippery shoes can contribute not only to your own fall, but to the falls of others, so thoroughly dry your feet before you walk on tile.

Ensure that your tiles are each securely in place. A loose tile or a tile that is slightly ajar can cause someone to slip. Regularly examine your tiles for cracks or irregularities that require your attention to correct.

    • 3

Thoroughly dry your tiles after you mop or clean up a spill. Ensure that there is no standing water or puddles left on your floor.

    • 4

Apply a slip-free solution to your tiles. Available at home improvement stores, slip-free solutions are designed to minimize the possibility of slips on your flooring. Simply spray the solution on your flooring and allow it to dry. Note that slip-free solutions are generally only used on stone tile flooring, but are not compatible with ceramic tiles.

Use your kitchen mop to apply a wax coating to your tiles. A thin layer of wax can reduce slippage and is simple to apply. Just wash your floor with regular soap and water, and then gently mop the wax onto your floor. Allow the wax to dry thoroughly before you walk on the tiles.
