How to Remove Stubborn Carpet Padding Stains

Your carpet gives your house color and matches cohesively with your furniture. However, your carpet was not designed to have anything spilled on it, and stain-causing liquids can penetrate down into the carpet padding. Since your carpet comes installed with padding, you have to deal with both levels. To combat the stain in the padding, you must remove the stain from the top down.

Things You'll Need

  • Dish detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Spray bottle
  • Cloth
  • Paper towel
  • Iron
  • Nail polish remover
  • Ice cube
  • Vacuum
  • Steam carpet cleaner

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 1/4 teaspoon of dish detergent or white vinegar with 32 oz. of water in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle vigorously and spray water-soluble stains. Take a dry cloth and begin blotting the moistened stain with the cloth. Continue the process until the stain comes up.

    • 2

Mix 1 tablespoon ammonia with 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray heavy water-soluble stains and begin blotting the stain with a dry cloth. Repeat until the stain is removed.

    • 3

Place a paper towel or two over fat, oil and wax stains. Warm an iron on a medium setting and begin ironing over the paper towel sheet. The fat, oil or wax will melt and be absorbed by the paper towel.

    • 4

Dip a small rag into nail polish remover and blot the area to remove nail polish stains.

    • 5

Freeze gum and wax stains with an ice cube and hit it with a hard object to shatter it. Vacuum immediately to remove the frozen gum or wax before it dries and settles back into the carpet.

    • 6

Vacuum your carpet thoroughly. Pour a cleaning solution into your steam carpet cleaner -- read instructions on the steam cleaner for specific products -- and begin steam-cleaning your carpet. Go over stubborn stains several times to remove the spot completely. Continue steam-cleaning until you have gone over the entire carpet. Steam cleaning will also penetrate through to the carpet padding and help clean it.
