How to Install an Eave and Cornice Box

Less of an actual box and more of a system that boxes off the slanted underside of roof edges, soffits are vinyl, metal or wood panels installed using a track system and basic carpentry techniques and tools. The soffit sheet material slides onto tracking guides screwed flush to the house. The soffit box is rarely seen or noticed. Homeowners and builders generally select the soffit material best matching the style of the eave and cornice of the home, as well as the material that best suits the climate of the home's location.

Instructions

  1. Prep Work

    • 1

Clear the work space by removing any lighting fixtures near the eaves. Secure any loose boards and trim. Remove or secure branches or shrubbery that interferes with the work space and ladder safety.

    • 2

Use the measuring tape to determine the width of the eave and size of soffit squares you'll be cutting. Next, measure and add up the lengths of all overhang areas to be covered. Divide the length of the overhangs by the size of the soffit squares to determine the number of necessary pieces.

    • 3

Determine the amount of F-channel hardware needed, from the overall length measurement of the overhang.

    Installation

    • 4

Use the measuring tape and saw to trim the wood block to the width of the house to the eave. Stack a level onto the wood block and fit the piece between the eave and the house. Mark a level line at each end of the eave to specifiy F-channel location.

    • 5

Install the receiving channels for the soffit by nailing the F-channels flush to the side of the house along the level line, every 16 inches. Do not nail tightly to allow for expansion and movement due to climate.

    • 6

Measure between the receiving areas to determine the necessary length for the soffit squares, less 1/2 inch for expansion and movement. Cut the necessary amount of soffit squares using the power circular saw.

    • 7

Insert the soffit squares between the receiving areas. Slide the squares next to one another and lock into place.
