How to Make a Stair Nosing for Laminate-Covered Stairs

Adding laminate to interior home stairs is an attractive way to spruce up the stairway. The laminate can be left as is, bare and beautiful, or it can be spiced up with a runner set in the middle of the stairway. No matter which way you decide to decorate and design your stairs, a nose is always a must to complete the look of the stair but also to hold the riser and the laminate on the tread in place.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure each tread width from wall to wall and mark the width on the laminate nosing.

    • 2

Cut the laminate nosing on a table saw using the measurements of the tread.

    • 3

Apply three lines of wood glue on the bare section of the tread where the nosing will be positioned.

    • 4

Set the nosing on the glue from left to right. Check that the hook on the front of the nosing is over the riser and the back of the nosing is over the laminate tread. Press down hard on the nosing to engage the glue.

Insert three 2-inch, 15-gauge nails into the nosing using a nail gun. Place one nail 3 inches from each wall, or edge of the tread, and one in the center.
