How to Fix a Cabinet Hinge Pulled Out of the Wall

When a cabinet hinge pulls out from a wall or the cabinet frame, there is usually one reason: the hole has bored-out. Through regular use, the weight of the door swinging open and shut puts stress on the retaining screws holding the hinges against the wall or cabinet frame. Eventually, the screws spin freely when reinserted. This frustrating predicament means the hinge will sag, causing the cabinet door to be off-level. Fortunately, you can fix this with little effort.

Things You'll Need

  • Golf tees
  • Wood dowels or toothpicks, optional
  • Wood glue
  • Rubber mallet
  • Saw
  • Medium-grit sandpaper
  • Screw gun

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the loose screw out by hand and set it in an easily retrievable place near the cabinet.

    • 2

Coat a golf tee with wood glue, then insert the golf tee, pointed-side first, into the bored-out hinge hole.

    • 3

Tap the golf tee in as far as it will go with a rubber mallet.

    • 4

Let the wood glue dry for one hour or as long as suggested by the manufacturer.

    • 5

Cut off the protruding part of the golf tee with a saw to make it flush with the wall or cabinet frame, then sand it smooth using medium-grit sandpaper.

    • 6

Retrieve the screw you set aside earlier. Push the hinge flush against the wall and drive the screw into the plugged hole with a screw gun to finish the hinge-hole repair.
