How to Make a Wood Bed Not Squeak

A squeaking can be an annoyance on nights when you have trouble getting to sleep. People who live in apartment buildings may find that quiet beds, not good fences, make good neighbors. The fact is that even the best-made piece of wood furniture is subject to expansion and contraction caused by changes in humidity and temperature. Loose joints and fittings are the normal causes for squeaking beds. Periodic maintenance helps your bed last longer and allows you, and possibly your neighbors, to enjoy a silent night.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the mattress and box spring from the frame.

    • 2

Remove the side rails. Rub a stick of paraffin over the end surfaces of the rails. For beds that use wood slats to support the box spring, rub paraffin over the surface of the brace that supports the slats as well.

    • 3

Inspect the attachment points for the side rails and bedposts. On most beds, the side rails slip into a slot in the bottom of the bedposts and are held in place with a toothed bracket. Use the appropriate tool--screwdriver, pliers or wrench--to adjust the bracket for a tighter fit to the bedpost.

Assemble the frame. Push the frame back and forth. Locate any remaining squeaks. Lubricate the friction points with paraffin or tighten the fittings as required.
