How to Wrap an Arch in Aluminum

Windows that feature arches at the top can be attractive features on the front of your home. As time goes by, though, the seals around the wooden arches can develop leaks that will make your home less energy efficient, and the wood itself can develop cracks. Because it is porous, wood can accrue moisture that can lead to rot over time if not monitored. As a result, wrapping the arch in aluminum and sealing around the wrap can greatly reduce the likelihood of leaking and cracking, lowering your energy bills and making dry rot less of a possibility.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the arch that you want to wrap in aluminum. Bend your aluminum sheeting to match the shape of the drip edge on the roof.

    • 2

Use the metal shears to make cuts every 2 inches along the higher side of the aluminum, all the way down to the fold or bend. The purpose of the cuts is to make the piece pliable so it will fit the curve of your arch.

    • 3

Line up the section of aluminum with your arch, making sure that the sliced sections point upward. Once the edge beneath the fold is under the drip edge and the aluminum lines up with your arch, nail it into place. Add other sections as needed until you have aluminum across the entire arch.

    • 4

Cut aluminum face plating with the shears so that it fits over your sliced archway. Apply waterproof tape to the seams and then caulk over the tape.
