Creating Gutters and Grooves

• Use a handheld concrete cutter to cut water gutters as well as crevices for wires, tubes, cables and pipes. Such tasks are particularly common in concrete homes that are not custom cast.

Making Doors and Windows

• Many concrete homes are custom cast to include doors and windows. If yours isn’t, construction will include using a handheld saw to cut through the concrete to establish doors, windows and vents. Generally, you will need to use a high-performance handheld concrete saw.

Core Drilling

• Core drilling is the process of cutting a circular hole through a concrete wall or slab. Core drilling is used in electric wiring, plumbing and heating projects. Sometimes manufacturers use the holes to anchor bolts and rods. Core drilling is also necessary to analyze structures as well as rock.

Grooving and Texturizing

• Handheld concrete cutters cut grooves and texture in concrete to make concrete safer to walk on and to help water run off outdoor surfaces. Grooving and texturizing is common on staircase surfaces.

Safety Issues

• Handheld concrete cutters are extremely dangerous. If the cut narrows and locks the blade, the saw could jerk back toward you and cause serious injury or death. For this reason, always hold the concrete cutter firmly with both hands and ensure that both feet are stable on the ground. Don’t hold the saw above your head to avoid other serious issues.
