How to Keep the Attic Cold

Perhaps your attic functions as a cozy guest room, or maybe it's just used for storage. Either way, it's ideal to keep your attic cool when it's hot outside. Whether your attic is fully finished or a work in progress, you have a number of ways to keep it comfortable, regardless of the temperature outside.

Add insulation or improve your existing insulation. If you plan to spend time in your attic during the summer, insulation can help to keep the area cool and conditioned. Good insulation also reduces your cooling costs, because your air conditioner won't have to work as hard. Fiberglass insulation is long-lasting and simple to install, but but foam insulation is also very effective in an attic space. Note that a professional must install foam.

Allow for good ventilation of your attic. Ventilation increases the airflow in your attic, which is necessary to prevent moisture buildup when you're not running the air conditioner. Avoid covering your air vents with insulation. They're key to air movement. If you have windows on opposite sides of the attic, don't interfere with them either, as they can provide cross-ventilation.

Fix any roofing problems you may have. Any holes or other external damage can cause cool conditioned air to leak from your attic. Consult a general contractor if you're unsure of how to fix your roofing problems.

    • 4

Seal the area around your chimney. If your home's chimney extends into the attic, ensure that the area around it is properly sealed with caulk. Even the smallest cracks can add unwanted heat to your attic.

Install a ceiling fan. A ceiling fan can assist ventilation and help to create a sense of coolness in the area. When you're air conditioning your attic, you can even turn up your thermostat a few degrees, because the fan will create a wind-chill effect.
