Trimming a Corian Countertop

Manufactured by DuPont, Corian is a durable, synthetic material molded into different products, including kitchen and vanity countertops. The easy-clean surface is relatively simple to install, provided you take accurate measurements beforehand. However, you may need to trim the overhang, or the part of the countertop that extends beyond its frame, before installing it. The amount of overhang you should remove depends on your kitchen’s layout and personal preference. Almost all the tools that cut wood or medium-density fiberboard can also cut or trim Corian countertops.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the Corian countertop on a pair of sawhorses, with its underneath side facing upward.

    • 2

Measure the excess length or width along the edge of the Corian countertop that you want to trim and mark it with a pencil. Take the measurements as accurately as possible, and double-check to ensure you aren’t trimming too much off, keeping the desired overhang in mind.

    • 3

Cut and spread lengths of masking tape over the surface of the countertop, centered on the measurement where you want to trim. The tape prevents the cut edge of the Corian countertop from splintering. Use a pencil to mark a line along the center of the tape to serve as a cutting guide for the saw. Ensure the line is straight and even.

    • 4

Cut through the Corian countertop along the marked line using a circular saw and fine-tooth carbide bit. Apply uniform pressure while you guide the saw down along the line. Work your way around the countertop until you trim the required parts.

    • 5

Sand the cut edge of the counter using fine-grit sandpaper. Apply steady pressure when sanding the edge so it is smooth and uniform. Wipe the edge with a lint-free cloth to remove sanding residue.

    • 6

Remove the remaining half of the masking tape applied along the cut edge of the Corian countertop. Install the trimmed countertop over the desired cabinet according to the manufacturer’s directions.
