How to Split Cypress Logs Into Planks

Cypress is softwood, but it’s often sold alongside hardwood since it grows in the same areas hardwood trees do. Like some other softwoods, cypress is easy to work with and decay resistant, making it suitable for construction projects and woodworking. Cutting cypress logs into planks makes it easier to work with. However, you have to allow the cypress to season for the proper amount of time after cutting to be able to use it.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a splitter in the end of the cypress log. Hit the splitter with the mallet to split the cypress log in two. Use the axe to cut the log apart if it does not split on it’s own.

    • 2

Put on goggles and gloves and start the table saw. Place one half of the cypress log on the table and line it up with the saw at the thickness you want to cut the wood plank. Most planks are between 1 and 3 inches thick.

    • 3

Push the cypress into the saw gently until the plank is cut all the way through. Repeat the process with the rest of the cypress log.

    • 4

Use the chisel to remove the remaining bark from the planks of wood.

    • 5

Stack the cypress planks into a pile with 1/4 to 1/2 inches between each plank and allow it to season for 6 months to a year. Use spacers, little chunks of spare wood, to put the gaps between the planks. Pile the cypress planks, lay an equal number of spacers of equal size over the planks, and pile more planks on top. Each new pile of planks should be perpendicular to the pile below it.
