Dissolving Wood-Glue Joints

Wood glue bonds extremely effectively to wood surfaces. With most types of wood glue, it is virtually impossible to dissolve glue holding joints once it has cured. Some tricks may work on weaker bonding wood glues and are worth a try. Otherwise, your best bet is to get a chisel and carefully cut the joints apart. Wood glue takes some time to set and usually bonds within three to four hours, setting completely within 24 hours.

• White vinegar
• Rag

     Aim a heat gun about 1/2 inch above the joint while attempting to pull the joints apart. In some instances, this technique will work to weaken the wood-glue bond.

     Dampen a rag with white vinegar and attempt to dissolve the remaining wood glue by scrubbing the joint's surface.

     Sand the wood joint using a fine-grained 250-grit sandpaper to remove any remaining wood glue and to smooth the surface. You can now reapply glue to the joints or refinish the furniture as necessary.
